This Continuing Education opportunity is offered to the faculty of Texas A&M Health Science Center, Baylor College of Dentistry, University of Texas Health Science Center School of Dentistry at Houston, and the Dental School, University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio as part of an education program funded by the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT)
Continuing Education for Dental School, University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio
The Continuing Education includes two parts:
(a) Online self-study for 2 free continuing education (CE) credits
(b) Didactic lecture for 1 free continuing education (CE) credit
To receive the total three (3) CE contact hours, participants must:
(a) Complete online the initial survey (pre-test), review the self-pacedmodules, complete assessment
(b) Attend the lecture and complete a post-test at the lecture
You must correctly answer 7 of the 10 questions on the knowledge assessment to receive 3 continuing education credits. The Online Self-Study must be completed before the Lecture.
Step 1: Complete Online Self-Study
The self-study component is offered on-line for two (2) CE hours and has been approved for independent study through the Texas A&M Health Science Center, Baylor College of Dentistry.

Step 2: Attend Didactic Lecture
Site: Dental School, University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio
Date: September 23, 2011, 8:00-8:50 AM at Grand Rounds (Dental School Study Club)
Location: Room 1.284T - Dental School Building, Large 1st Floor Lecture Room
One hour of CE credit will be awarded through the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Dental School Continuing Education for attending the lecture.

Continuing Education Overview
This course will provide basic information on dealing with nicotine dependent patients. It will focus on the practice of an easy, effective, non-threatening method for dealing with patient resistance and increasing patient motivation and compliance in dental practice. It will also provide clinician guidance for the use of pharmacotherapy in assisting patients in quitting tobacco.
Continuing Education Objectives
• Learn how to take a quick tobacco history
• Learn how to scale nicotine dependence and readiness to quit
• Learn techniques to enhance communication and patient adherence
• Understand tobacco dependence and its effect on oral health
• Understand the use of pharmacotherapy for tobacco cessation
Instructions for Online Self-Study
Due to the nature of the CPRIT funded program, you will only be given access to the self-study content once. Please adjust your schedule to accommodate the time necessary to complete the survey and view the module included in the on-line curriculum. Also note that the Online Self-Study must be completed before the Lecture.
You must first deactivate your web browser block on pop-up windows to access the initial survey and subsequent self-study modules. Instructions for disabling your web browser pop-up block.
Initial Survey: All blanks must be filled in on the initial survey to proceed to the modules. Upon completion of the survey, click "Done" to close the survey. The survey will prompt you to complete any unanswered questions. Your responses will not be recorded if you manually close the pop-up window. You will be directed to the independent study upon completion of the survey.
Self-Study Module: After viewing the self-study module slides, a knowledge assessment will appear in a separate window. Please answer all questions to the best of your ability and click "Done" to close the assessment. You must correctly answer 7 of the ten questions for CE credit eligibility.

Texas A&M Health Science Center, Baylor College of Dentistry and University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Dental School are designated as recognized providers by the Continuing Education Recognition Program (CERP) conducted under the auspices of the ADA and by the AGD for Fellowship, Mastership and membership maintenance credit.
